Considerations for apartment bedroom decor

Before getting into the ideas, your choices can be impacted by these:

Space constraints

Size matters here! You don’t want your space to feel too cluttered. But, that’s tough to balance when you’re starting off with a tiny bedroom.

Here’s where some creativity comes in. With small spaces, tall and skinny pieces can draw the eye upward, making the room feel bigger. Mirrors help too! And, practical furniture that increases your storage space is always a positive.

Rental agreement limits

If you’re renting, what’s in your agreement? What can you do (or not do) with the space? And, what are the implications of breaking the rules?

These limits may stop you from painting the walls or drilling holes in them. But, you can get around them by using peel and stick wallpaper, decals, and command hooks for hanging your favorite decor.

Here’s a little boho paradise that has renter-friendly peel and stick wallpaper!

Are you into feng shui?

Ancient practices like Feng shui (Chinese) and Vastu Shastra (Indian) can influence what you add to your room and how you arrange it.

For instance, in Feng shui, it’s all about allowing qi to flow freely through the space and creating harmony. That harmony is often achieved by using symmetry, mixing opposing elements like light and dark tones and masculine and feminine design.

Is this type of contrast something you’re into?

The practice also guides you on where to position your bed in relation to the door. It prefers the door to be visible from the bed but not in line with it (commanding position) and advises your feet should never face the door.

Rearranging your bedroom with these rules can certainly affect your design choices. Here’s a simple bedroom that works with balance, symmetry and natural tones.

Lights

Light affects sleep quality too. If you have bright sunlight streaming in too early in the morning, it can definitely affect your ability to get 8 hours of rest. Blackout curtains and double curtain rod brackets would definitely help here!

Your light exposure at night also affects sleep quality.

Did you know very bright light and blue light exposure at night actually suppresses melatonin, the hormone that tells your body it’s time for bed? This 2023 Korean study explains more if you’re interested.

The study suggests dimmable lights and warmer colors (like yellows to red) are better for winding down.

Fabrics

While beautiful bedding is aesthetic, it should also be breathable. Natural materials like cotton, linen, and wool are perfect for keeping you cool and dry while you sleep.

Polyester sheets don’t come close to these natural fabrics.

Aesthetic

The aesthetic you are going for would definitely affect everything from color scheme to furniture, textures, and more.

If minimalism and modern are more your vibe, then you’re looking at black, white, gray and wood tones, geometric shapes, and good storage to keep everything hidden.

A boho style is all about browns, greens, and earthy colors, natural fabrics, woven textures, unique patterns and art from across the world. Glam is all luxury! Super soft, furry textures, white, pink and metallic colors and mirrors are perfect for this bold confident aesthetic.

Of course, you can go for a moody, vibey look too. Bolder and darker tones, LED backlighting, and futuristic art work so well together!

So, what’s your style?

Apartment Bedroom Decor Ideas

1. Bedframes

Let’s start with your bed support. Bedframes can be either hidden or dominate a bedroom space. And, the height (plus mattress) will certainly affect the night stands you look at.

While there are so many frames to choose from, these are my favorites. This first one from the Mellow Store is made with pine wood and is simple, boho perfection. You can also never go wrong with an all-metal frame that would never break on you.

If you’re looking for both a headboard and storage, the Allewie lift up bed is a great choice. Its metal frame, wooden slats and fabric upholstery make it cozy and sturdy. And, if you have the space for it, this rustic looking frame dominates the room with a beautiful headboard and storage bench to the front.

For a more glam aesthetic, this frame with upholstered headboard is giving modern luxury! But, if you are into a more industrial, old-world vibe, you’ll appreciate this Victorian styled frame.

While mattresses don’t affect your apartment bedroom decor, they play a crucial role in the quality of sleep. So, be sure to pick out one that’s suitable for you and your preferences.

2. Bedding

We’ve talked about fabrics already and why natural materials like cotton, linen, bamboo and wool are great for sleep quality. Lower thread count is actually better in a lot of cases since they are breathable. Higher thread count doesn’t mean better!

As for color, your aesthetic would definitely dictate what to get.

I have sheet sets from the Shilucheng store and I absolutely love them. My linen sheets are divine and my bamboo ones (well rayon made with bamboo) are going on 5 years. They are still so soft, maintained their color, and feels so cool during the warmer months. The lyocell sheets (made with eucalyptus) are definitely on my list to get next time.

3. Throw pillows

You can bring in pops of color and contrasting tones with throw pillows on your bed. Or use them to pull the theme together.

If boho is your vibe, this cute long pillow cover can definitely be a focal point on your bed. You can also get simple covers from Miulee (they have a ton of color options!) and these cotton waffle ones add great texture!

Patterned pillow cases also do well to tie the room together and solidify the aesthetic you are going for. Match them with the wall decor, wallpaper and other elements in the room. Here are a few unique options.

4. Blankies and throws

Much like throw pillows, you can use blankets and throws to bring in contrasting colors and textures to the bed.

A cashmere throw would feel so luxurious and introduce delicious softness. Another great option would be a soft muslin blankie that is super breathable. Or, if you got the waffle pillows from earlier, this cotton waffle blanket would certainly match.

5. Night stands

Cute night stands can definitely add to the aesthetics of your apartment bedroom. You can go for ones with lots of storage or minimalistic frames. Height also matters too. You’ll want tables that range from slightly shorter to slightly taller than your bedframe plus mattress.

I like this sleek, vibey one with good storage and built-in LED lights. Picture setting it to red as you wind down for sleep. A wooden night stand would be perfect for vintage, boho, and even farmhouse themes. As for modern and glam aesthetics, these white, wooden ones are awesome!

Floating night stands are also a great option too if you can drill into the wall.

Oh and you can find great pieces while thrifting. Try rehabbing old tables or repurposing scrap wood.

6. Lamps

Lamps are a great way to make your room more cozy and aesthetic. Plus they can introduce the warmer lights you need before bed.

From a decor perspective, they can bring in some height to the night stands. This can add unique interest to the space and draw the eyes to them and the decor on them.

If you want taller lamps, definitely go for these boho ceramic ones or these retro, geometric lamps. They’re made by the same company (and there are so many more design options!).

The third lamp below gives a industrial, minimalistic vibe if that’s your aesthetic. Oh and it’s dimmable!

For shorter lamp options, this sunflower touch one is really unique and would work great in a girly, glam room. Or go for simplistic, minimalism with this rounded dimmable lamp.

Of course, there are tons more on Etsy and in vintage and thrift shops. You can DIY some unique ones too! Take the ones you have now, spray paint them and they’ll look brand new!

You can even get a lamp kit and turn any of your favorite vases into lamps. Fia Garcia has so many ideas here:

Take a look at this video too showing how to convert a vase into a lamp:

7. Cute decor for night stands

There’s a lot of creative ways to decorate your night stand. You can add lamps, clocks, crystals, trinket bowls, lotion, phone charger, books you’re into, your journal, faux plants and decorative sculptures.

The stands are also perfect for cute sentimental souvenirs like beautiful rocks, shells and handmade art pieces.

Here are a couple options to think about.

Plants

I prefer artificial plants than real ones for my bedside table. I have bad sinuses so I certainly won’t risk any possibility of mold in my space. These fake eucalyptus stems are my go-to option and the plant pots match most aesthetics.

This clear glass vase with fake eucalyptus stems is great too and it actually has faux water!

Clocks

If you are a clock-in-your-room person (I am definitely not!), go for unique digital clocks like this one with a wood-like finish. Or if vintage and retro is more your vibe, think about getting this old school clock.

Sculptures and more decorations

For the more decorative elements, flickering, flameless candles can bring in a moody vibe when you’re not using your lamps or overhead light. And, if you want boho, farmhouse aesthetics, these decorative knot and faux books with wooden beads are beautiful.

And, while sculptures are definitely a personal preference, how cute are these?

Glasses holders

If you wear glasses all day or just need them for reading, get aesthetic eyeglass holders like these. They’re just adorable.

8. Wallpaper and panels

You can find so many renter-friendly, peel and stick wallpaper designs to decorate your apartment bedroom. There are peel and stick wall tiles too with patterns that add so much unique interest.

These PVC wall panels resemble wooden slats and have a 3D effect. Fore a more geometric, artsy look, these white panels are amazing. And, I really love this simple boho peel and stick wallpaper.

9. Paintings

Let your creativity shine when it comes to wall art and decor. You can create your own custom pieces that truly resonate with you. And, when you need a change, simply paint over the canvas!

Here’s a simple video for a boho painting.

For more unique ideas, Studio Spindler has a bunch of videos on her channel that you might really like. Here’s one of my faves. In a later video of hers, she paints the entire thing black and splatters beige paint on top. It’s so good!

If you aren’t the artsy type and would rather just purchase paintings, there are so many avenues to explore. You can find local artists and commission pieces or visit a local art gallery or even a nearby graphics studio.

Thrifting can also be great for finding unique pieces that just need a different frame to be spectacular.

And, there’s also the Amazon option. There are many thousands of products that are sure to fit your style and budget. If I had to choose, these would be my picks.

There’s also a new trend of using spotlights over wall decor, much like the ones in art galleries. Here are a couple options to consider! The first one gives a range of colors and the second one has 3 white light settings.

10. Decals

Besides paintings, you can add intrigue to the walls with decals. Bring in fun whimsical elements with 3D animal stickers, flowers, stars, and even beautiful quotes and affirmations.

These decals are sure to bring some joy into your bedroom.

11. More wall decor

Oh, there are so many more decor options to add to the wall. Tapestries, dreamcatchers, macrame art, real and fake vining plants, fairy lights, peel-and-stick crown molding and floating shelves are just some of the many ideas.

These macrame hanging shelves are delightful and can be attached with supportive command hooks (or metal ones). For hanging plants, this artificial ivy can add vibrant greens to your space.

And, for whimsical, nostalgic softness, these fairy lights are beautiful! You can hang cute Polaroids, magazine cutouts and even elements of your vision board on the light strings too.

I know there are tons more decor elements to talk about like curtains, blinds, rugs, mirrors, reading chairs, overhead lights, sconces, large plants, and even mini work desk and chair. But, I think I’ll stop here since it’s getting way too long!

While decor is pleasing to the eyes, you can also stimulate the other senses too with lovely lavender scents, soft plush rugs, and a soothing sound machine. As I said in the beginning, create the oasis you want!

I hope you found some great inspo here to get started! And, if you want to check out all the decorating ideas on the blog, stop by my decor page.
