Practicing gratitude isn’t some new age gimmickry. It is an incredibly powerful technique that helps you rewire your nervous system to feel better and more joyful. These gratitude affirmations can be great additions to your gratitude journey.
Affirmations may not work for everyone and that’s okay! Some report positive feelings when using affirmations and others are indifferent.
It’s not a one-sized-fits-all tool that can help you feel better, softer or more grateful. Don’t force it – if it’s not for you, that’s okay! Explore other gratitude techniques that are better suited for your needs.
While there are a bunch of studies exploring gratitude, I like referring to this 2022 one. It explored several articles on the subject and found the following:
gratitude is often felt when you believe an external entity (god, nature, the universe) caused you to have a positive outcome.
gratitude happens when you notice and appreciate the positives.
gratitude can be a coping mechanism as much as it can be a state of being and an emotion.
gratitude is linked to better wellbeing, better social behavior, greater hopefulness, and improved sleep quality and quatity.
gratitude exercises can have small positive effects on mental health and moderate improvements for depression and anxiety.
These were pretty balanced takeaways from the study. Gratitude isn’t a cure-all type of technique to make you feel instantly better. And gratitude affirmations won’t magically improve your mood.
But, they might help if you give them a shot!
