How to be the main character of your life
Who is the main character in your life now?
If you don’t feel like you are the main character in your life, who holds that position? Is it a child, a spouse, a parent, a boss, or a dominating friend?
Why do you feel they are the main character and not you in your own story? If you’re a new mom and the answer is your kid, that’s perfectly normal and you can hop on over to the next section. If it is someone else, why do you feel like this? Is it comparison or limiting beliefs? Or lack of self confidence?
Dig deep into these answers and explore if the relationships you have are mutually beneficial to you. Or figure out if there are some toxic, manipulative or even abusive aspects.
This thought experiment has to be done with a whole lot of self compassion, empathy and patience. It can feel really vulnerable to look at your life. But, taking a hard look at your relationships can act as a great guide on what to do next to make things better.
Accept yourself as the center
If you’ve been conditioned to meet the needs of others first, it can be really difficult centering yourself, even in your own mind. Unlearning this conditioning can take a long time to do but being aware of it is a great first step.
Every time you find yourself putting everyone’s needs ahead of yours, pause and ask yourself what do you need in this moment. Chances are you can meet your needs just as easily as you can meet everyone else’s and you’ll be happier for it.
You might feel pangs of guilt when you put yourself first. But, think about this: happy moms positively influence the happiness and success of their kids.
So, feeling happy, satisfied and fulfilled will likely improve the wellbeing of those closest to you.
