Doing monthly reports for work is pretty common. Why not apply the concept to your life with monthly journal prompts?

The prompts can help you see what made you happy or upset during the month. And they can help you figure out new ideas you’ woul’d like to try in the month ahead.

Make journaling fun (it’s not homework!) with stickers, colored pens and pencils, doodles and happy things that’ll excite your inner child. Of course, you can add some things to make your girl boss happy too ha!

Monthly journal prompts

Monthly reflection

Here are some great monthly reflection journal prompts for the positives of the last month.

  • Describe the last month in 4 words (e.g. eventful, fun, joyful, somber, etc).
  • What was your favorite memory last month?
  • List 5 things that happened that you were grateful for.
  • Did you try anything new last month?
  • Name 10 things that made you smile.

For the tougher aspects of the month:

  • What were you nervous about that went well?
  • Is there anything you could have done about that (from above)?
  • What didn’t go the way you wanted it to?
  • Which emotion did you experience the most last month? What caused it?
  • What can you do to keep your emotions on the happier, more positive side of the spectrum?
  • Did you feel limited in any way last month? What were your mind blocks?
  • Did you come across anything (or anyone) that drained your energy?

  • If you had to rate the last month from 1 to 10 (where 1 is awful and 10 is amazing), what score would you give?

  • If you could do anything differently, what would you do or change?
  • What’s the best thing you ate last month?
  • Can you remember what energized and inspired you?

Start of month journal prompts

Here’s some new month journal prompts for planning and goal setting.

  • List 3 things or events you are excited for this month.
  • What are a couple things you are not looking forward to?
  • If you had to give the month a theme, what would it be? (e.g. adventure, r&r, change, determined)
  • Are there things you want to improve this month? Name at least 3.
  • What do you hope would be different this month?
  • Is there anyone you would want to connect with more this month?
  • What about people you prefer to avoid? (beware energy vampires!)
  • What do you want to feel more of this month? (joy, peace, relaxed?)
  • What advice or kind words would you want to say to your one-month-older self? (come back to this answer in a month!)

Monthly goals journal prompts

  • What’s your big picture goal for the new month?
  • Set your intentions. What do you want to accomplish this month? Give specifics!
  • What are your top 3 work goals for the month?
  • Is there any new hobby, activity or adventure you want to try?
  • What habit or activity do you want to continue from last month?
  • If you had to manifest one thing, what would it be?
  • What’s on your list of things to try? (food, TV, movies, etc)
  • Are you going to do self care differently in the new month?
  • What will compassion and kindness to yourself look like this month?
  • What activity can you do this month to step outside of your comfort zone that will take the least energy and anxiety?
  • Okay, if you had to swing for the fences and fully embrace leaving your comfort zone, what would you want to do?
