Whether you are reflecting on the past year or planning your new year’s resolutions, these January journal prompts are great questions to think about. Use them to set your goals, manifest your intentions and stay focused on your dreams.
They can also help with creating a self care plan for the season, especially in the peak of winter when our physical and mental health are affected by the weather. So let’s get into it.
If you are interested in journal prompts, I have a bunch more on the blog for you to try including these monthly prompts and weekly ones too.
Start of the year journal prompts
Let’s reflect on the past:
- List your 5 best memories from last year.
- What were your greatest accomplishments in the year before?
- What were life changing lessons you learned in the past year?
- Did you have tough moments last year? How did you get through it? What would you do differently?
- What habits do you want to leave in the past?
Let’s think ahead:
- What habits do you want to take into the new year?
- Set a theme for the new year. (e.g. the year of change or adventure)
- Is there any upcoming event that you are really excited about?
- What do you want to do more of this year?
- Picture yourself one year from now. Describe what happened in the last 12 months.

- What challenges are you expecting to face this month? What can you do to minimize their impact?
- If everything goes wrong, then what? Can you adapt? Pivot? Start over? (is it really the worst thing to fail? Maybe you could find something better!)
